Weight Loss & Inflammation

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates (2400 BC)

Hippocrates said this well over two thousand years ago.  It remains the single most important statement made regarding the relationship between your Health and the immense influence you have over staying healthy. Proper Nutrition is in your control and the food you eat combined with the appropriate supplements is critical to optimal health and disease prevention.  Proper Nutrition plays such a pivotal role in your Health that it is ironic that Food may also be the most dangerous element you will ever encounter.

Obesity is epidemic in the United States and developed nations around the world. What is Obesity though?  Obesity is the accumulation of abnormal, irregular, or excessive fat that may interfere with the maintenance of an optimal state of health. Because this excessive fat is abnormal it creates an imbalance due to the excess of macronutrients in the adipose tissues.  This excess stimulates them to release inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 6, and reduces the production of adiponectin, predisposing to and creates a pro-inflammatory state and as well as oxidative stress. The pro-inflammatory state increased level of interleukin 6 stimulates the liver to synthesize and secrete C-reactive protein (which we test for in a CRP test). As a risk factor, this pro-inflammatory state, when considered “chronic”, is a decisive mechanism in the development of the leading killers: cardiovascular diseases including coagulation, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and diabetes mellitus. It is also associated with and linked to the development of non-cardiovascular diseases such as psoriasis, depression, cancer, and renal diseases. In other words, the result is simple: the more obese you are the more your body creates an overabundance of inflammation and a pro-inflammatory state.  This inflammation not only affects your body’s cells but increases your risk for developing life-threatening diseases and chronic health problems.

Obesity:

Maintaining a healthy low body fat (visceral) through proper nutrition and a customized supplementation protocol is key to controlling inflammation and optimizing your health. Researchers believe that overeating of foods that are high in both fat and carbohydrates may cause stress to the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the cells’ powerhouses, converting fatty acids to energy. Mitochondria take in nutrients from the cell, break it down, and turn it into energy. This energy is then in turn used by the cell to carry out various functions.  Overeating confuses and imbalances the mitochondria and they alert the immune system increasing the immune response.  This response elevates C-reactive proteins (CRPs) and causes the body to generate excessive inflammation.

Obesity is also linked to Insulin-sensitivity.  Because a lot of obese individuals tend to have Poor Nutrition (with high glycemic, high carb, “Western diets”), this elevates insulin levels which results in the body’s creating and storing fat cells.  These insulin spikes will also prevent the body from burning off existing fat cells as it is in “storage” mode.  Insulin spikes can also lead to other diseases related to Chronic Inflammation.

Inflammation:  Inflammation is the body’s natural and healthy response to injury and illness and has many beneficial qualities.  When Healthy, your body’s immune system, led by your White Blood Cells (WBC), attack invading pathogens and once eradicated shut down to allow for Fibroblasts to begin the rebuilding process.  However, when inflammation is chronic, your body does not cease the attack after the invading pathogens are eliminated and a longer more subtle war begins being waged on your healthy tissues and organs.   This longer chronic condition is characterized by elevated C-reactive proteins (CRP) in the blood which is a marker for inflammation associated with several illnesses. This pro-inflammatory state increases levels of interleukin 6 and stimulates the liver to synthesize and secrete C-reactive protein (which we test for in a CRP test). As a risk factor, this pro-inflammatory state, when considered “chronic “, is a decisive mechanism in the development of the leading cardiovascular killers and diseases including coagulation, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and diabetes mellitus. It is also associated with linked to the development of non-cardiovascular diseases such as psoriasis, depression, cancer, and renal diseases. In other words, the result is simple: the more obese you are the more your body creates an overabundance of inflammation reacts and creates a pro-inflammatory state.  This inflammation not only affects your body’s cells but increases your risk for developing life-threatening diseases and chronic health problems. Research indicates that Chronic Inflammation is the causative factor in many cross-platform diseases including the “Four Horsemen” (the top killers of Americans): Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Diabetes, Cancer and Alzheimer’s.
