STEM CELL THERAPY
Medication and surgery are fundamental aspects of modern medicine. Without them, we would still be susceptible to death from an infection or a burst appendix. Why stem cells?
The human body is made of billions of cells that are specialized to form specific organs like the skin, muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, brain, and bone. Every day these cells undergo a degenerative and regenerative process. As the older cells die, new cells are created from stem cells (duplication) with the unique capability of being able to change into other types of other cells (Mesenchymal). Stem cells, themselves, are undifferentiated or are cells that are like a blank canvas. In effect, they have the capability of developing into cells that serve numerous functions in different parts of the body based upon the body’s need for healing or tissue regeneration. Most cells in the body are differentiated cells because their purpose is to serve a specific function in a particular organ. However, when tissues are injured or the regenerative process slows due to age or illness, the degenerative process exceeds the body’s capability to rebuild, resulting in weaker, painful and less functional structures. There are four main types of stem cells:
- Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)
- Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)
While there are several types of stem cells, those promoting musculoskeletal (MSK) healing (tendon, ligament, cartilage, and bone) can be found in bone marrow, which acts as a type of stem cell reservoir. Through the extraction of stem cells from bone marrow, we concentrate the cells and subsequently re-inject them into other areas of the body to treat injured tissues. The supercharged effect this produces is an enhancement of the body’s natural repair process of degenerated and injured tendons, ligaments, and arthritic joints. This process occurs daily and is the body’s defense against the natural breakdown process that occurs from aging, injury, and overuse.
